Now, everyone knows I love cultural cross-fertilization as much as the next person as long as it’s not done in some sort of fetishized colonial way. I’m just asking for a little R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
With that said, I was listening to smashits.com, the greatest website for listening to Bollywood movie songs and I ran across an ad for the IFC mini-series, Bollywood Hero. It will be airing on IFC at 10 pm August 6th, 7th, and 8th (these are the moments when I wish I could order certain cable channels on-demand), starring Chris Kattan. The whole series was filmed in Mumbai over the span of 10 weeks. So, what’s the series about? It’s about an out of work Hollywood actor going to rebuild his career halfway across the world. For those who don’t know, Hollywood produces somewhere around 400 movies per year, and Bollywood produces 800 per year. Mumbai is definitely the place to go if you’re an out of work actor, I would have to say.
Anyways, Bollywood Hero sounds awesome. Even better the cast has a few gems stashed in there which includes Maya Rudolph, David Alan Grier (he was too good in Jumanji, which is still fantastic after all these years), Keanu Reeves, and Andy Samberg (who doesn’t love him?!). Crew-wise, it seems like a ton of Slumdog Millionaire members collaborated on this project. Most importantly, the choreographer who put together the closing number, “Jai Ho” is on board which means I won’t be able to sleep for nearly a month in anticipation!
Too bad my main man, A.R. Rahman, doesn’t have a hand in this. Maybe, that’s a sign; without his genius, this may be no good.
